Gas Leaks & What You Should Know

Whether your home or business is supplied by propane from an on-site tank or natural gas through a utility meter, leaks are a serious safety hazard. Both fuels are highly flammable and can ignite from even a small spark. Most suppliers add an odorant (often described as a “rotten egg” smell) to help detect leaks quickly  but you should never rely on smell alone.

Recognize the Signs
• Smell: Sulfur or rotten egg odor.
• Sound: Hissing or roaring near gas lines, tanks, or appliances.
• Sight: Dead vegetation near buried lines, dust blowing from the ground, or bubbles in standing water.

If You Suspect a Leak
1. Leave the area immediately do not use lights, phones, or anything that could create a spark.
2. Shut off the main gas supply if it’s safe to do so.
3. Call your gas supplier or local utility from a safe location.
4. Contact emergency services if needed.

Prevention Tips
• Have all gas appliances and lines inspected regularly by qualified technicians.
• Keep tank areas clear and accessible.
• Learn where your shut-off valves are and how to use them.
• For buried lines, call 811 before digging.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Knowing how to recognize, respond to, and prevent gas leaks can protect your property and save lives.
